Lit Candles

Symbolic Actions

From handfasting and "Jumping to Broom" to the simple act of lighting a candle, a symbolic action can add further meaning, significance and depth to your ceremony.

Not sure where to start?

Here are some examples of symbolic actions I can offer and provide, to give you some ideas...

(This list is by no means extensive, so if you have something in particular in mind,

please just ask!)

Giving of rings

The giving and receiving of rings is probably the most well known example of a symbolic action within a couple's ceremony.

You might also wish to include a ring warming - where the rings are passed around your guests, who "warm" them with  well wishes or a blessing.

CANDLES

There are many types of candle ceremonies I can perform, for couple's or naming ceremonies. A popular choice is a Family Unity Candle, where lights from individual candles are given to a larger candle. In keeping all flames alight this symbolises the joining together of a family, whilst maintaining the original light of the individual.

HANDFASTING

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition to symbolise the joining together of two lives.  Cords or ribbons are wrapped by friends and family around the hands of a couple. The couple then pull the collective materials through the loop and towards each other, to literally "tie the knot"!

SAND CEREMONY

Popular for both couple's and naming ceremonies. This beautiful act allows multiple participants to pour their coloured sands into a vessel, creating a colourful keepsake and symbolising the growing or joining together of a family.

JUMPING THE BROOM

A fun addition to your ceremony, this symbolises the new beginning that getting married represents, while sweeping away the old. It shows you boldly and joyfully leaving your past and taking a leap into your future.

Martini

COCKTAILS

Similar to the sand ceremony, but more delicious (And not for under-18's!). Why not consider mixing your favourite drink for an symbolic and refreshing toast?
